2018 Vintage Yachting Games: Press Release

The next Vintage Yachting Games  will be sailed in Copenhagen, Denmark.

After successful previous events in Medemblik, the Netherlands (2008) and Lake Come, Italy (2012) the 2018 edition of the Vintage Yachting Games will take place between 16 and 22 September 2018 (first day of racing Sept. 18th) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

 

The Games will be hosted by a cooperation between the Royal Danish Yacht Club and the Hellerup Sailing Club, which was signed off last week. Originally, the event was planned for Weymouth (2016) but could not take place due to local circumstances.

 

The Vintage Yachting Games are a four-year recurring sailing event to celebrate the Olympic period of the former Olympic Classes. The organization anticipates on the participation of the following classes: 12’ Dinghy, Europe, Olympiajol, 12m Sharpie, Flying Dutchman, Yngling, Soling, Dragon and 5.5 Metre. Besides those, other former Olympic Classes, like the Tornado, Star and other Metre classes are welcome.

 

Still many former Olympic Games classes are internationally very, active and continued competitive racing at a high level. The classes are mutually very different, in size, design. Some classes continued with the original materials, while other classes were updated to modern standards, However all these classes are still reputed through their Olympic history. The Vintage Yachting Games give the classes the international platform to race in spirit of this commonly shared past. At the last event on Lake Come more than 250 sailors in 115 boats (about the same numbers as the 1960 Olympics in Naples, Italy) highly appreciated racing in this unique setting.

 

For more information: info@vintageyachtinggames.org. The formal Notice of Race will be published before the end of the year. The registration will start at the beginning of the year. However, the first current and former top sailors have already demonstrated their interest. It leads to the expectation of yet another great racing week of these still great classes.
